The master plan
Bootstrapping the network and building an open platform
The best way to grow DIMO is by simultaneously onboarding users, developing the core protocol and complimentary infrastructure, and seeding it with amazing experiences that highlight DIMO’s unique advantages.
More users means more connected vehicles on the network, more connected vehicles means more developers building apps and services for users, and more apps and services means more users. $DIMO token rewards kickstart the flywheel. Then the flywheel generates demand for the $DIMO token.
Like any core technological infrastructure, DIMO can build up over time, with contributions from a decentralized network of builders, and follow the technology adoption life cycle.
Phase 1: 2023
Innovators in the USA, Canada, and Europe are able to connect any car made after 2008 from any automaker to the network, view its data, and share that data with others using a minimum viable app. Users can connect with software or hardware. Users are most interested in the $DIMO token as this stage.
Phase 2: 2024
A growing number of Early Adopters join the network with 1) more accessible hardware and 2) a more refined user experience in DIMO compatible applications. Companies building on DIMO begin to offer software development kits (SDKs) that make it easier for developers to deploy apps. The breadth and depth of vehicle data expands rapidly aided by the community of builders. Early Adopters are still most interested in earning $DIMO tokens, but other forms of utility are growing.
Phase 3: 2025-2026
The base of connected vehicles is now massive and SDKs and complementary infrastructure are maturing. Several killer apps built by early developers emerge and their utility helps to onboard the Early Majority. Users like earning $DIMO, but they are even more interested in the utility of these killer apps and use cases than token rewards.
Phase 4: 2027-2028
Continued integration of other blockchain primitives and complementary infrastructure, along with an increasing network of independent nodes and industry partnerships, continues to advance the functionality, resilience, and trustlessness of the DIMO protocol. DIMO can be seamlessly deployed in any country by a decentralized network of developers. Automakers, insurance companies, and more start to embrace DIMO because of its utility and neutrality. The increasing diversity and quality of apps and services onboard the Late Majority who are now even more compelled by the network’s utility and may even be unaware of how DIMO is built.
Phase 5: 2029 and beyond
DIMO is now undeniable and the Laggards are being onboarded, motivated entirely by the utility of the ecosystem. Soon it will be difficult to own a vehicle without connecting it to DIMO in the same way it’s difficult to operate in today’s world without a smartphone. Apps and services have reached maturity and built off one another, taking advantage of the unique composability offered by blockchain protocols. New offerings have been deployed that people couldn’t imagine prior to DIMO existing, the way we couldn’t imagine Netflix or Uber in 1995. The DIMO protocol itself has reached technological maturity and core developers focus on building infrastructure further up the technology stack. DIMO expands beyonds automotive to include non-mobility IoT use cases.
DIMO is built by a decentralized network of contributors and this section illustrates a compelling and plausible vision for what such contributors may build. Ultimately, what various groups and individuals contribute is their decision and may include the things listed here, things not listed here, or nothing at all. This section does not make any commitments about what may be built and the future of DIMO may differ.
